Survey Report on Chair Preference

Executive Summary
This summary is done to show the overall content of the survey on design of chair  preferred by  IIUM students . This survey is done to measure the IIUM students opinion about existing design of chair  in their university. The result will reflect the IIUM  students satisfaction about using chair provided by university and which part of the design of the chair that they like and dislike.
Our focuses include the quality and characteristics of the chair that assist student having lecture comfortably. The questions in the survey are made with attention to design a better chair for university students. It’s straight to the point and it may only need less than 5 minutes for a student to complete the survey questions.

Objectives
1.     To evaluate students’ opinion and satisfaction about chair provided in their university.
2.     To evaluate IIUM students’ preference on design of chair.
3.     To discover characteristics of chair that suitable for university students.
4.     To create new design of chair that can be used in all university.




Methodologies

 Survey is the sample of individuals from a population with a view towards making statistical interference about the population using the sample. Surveys provide important information for all kinds of research fields. Therefore, we are using survey method because we are collecting data information by sample. So we are distributed our instruments which questionnaire to the students through survey. Our survey had been conducted on 50  students of IIUM. The instruments that we use are consisting of 5 demographic questions and 21 questions about chair preferences for the survey purposes and to gather information for data analysis for our findings.



Result & Findings     

Section A –Demographic
Based on our survey on 50 respondents, there are 31 males and 19 females which represent male students as 62% and female students as 38%. Generally, 74% of them are in the age range between 21 to 23 years old, 12% of them are 18 to 20 years old and 14% of them are 24 to 26 years old. Average weight range for male students is 61 to 80kg and for female students is 40 to 60kg. 58% of male respondents have height range of 151 to 170cm and the rest have 171cm and above. Meanwhile, for female students, 18% of them have height range of 121 to 150cm, 66% of them have 151 to 170cm, 16% of them are 171 and above. Most of our respondents are from faculty of Engineering, which are 52% of total respondents. 18% of them are from faculty of from Human Science, 4% from faculty of Economy and 26% are from other faculty.






Section B –Questionaire

For the first question, 40% like the design of chair provided by faculty. While 60% dislike. About 74% disagreed that design of the chair give comfort to them while the rest said the otherwise. The chair provided by faculty does give noise to 68% of the respondents while other said otherwise. 50% of the respondent agreed that chairs made today are easy to move and the rest said no. The chair made today is not flexible enough for 80% of the respondents and 20% said it is flexible for them. About 45% of respondent agreed that chairs can be preserved for a long time and 55% agreed that chair cannot be preserved at all. Chairs made today are portable and that statement is strongly agreed by 74% of the respondents while 26% said no. 70% of the respondent experienced very stable chair and 30% disagreed. 80% of the respondents agreed that chair made today is safe and 20% agreed that chair is not safe. 58% of the respondents like their chair  to be colourful while 42%  dislike colourful chair. Foldable chair is preferred by 96% of the respondent while only 4% like normal chair. Small size of the chair does matter to 62% of respondents while 38% preferred bigger size of the chair. 100% of the respondent demanding chair to be adjustable. 80% of the respondents preferred the chair consist of more than one material while 20% disagreed. Leather seat is preferred by 76% of the respondent while 24% preferred a normal seat. 42% of the respondents want their chairs to have wheels while 58% want otherwise. 86% of the respondents agreed that their chair manage to withstand



their body weight while 14% of them disagreed. The most preferred colour of the chair is black which agreed 48% of the respondents followed by 16% for brown, 18% for grey and 18% preferred other colours. 24% of the respondents preferred steel chair, 36% of the respondents preferred wood chair, 20% of the respondents preferred aluminium chair and 20% of the respondents preferred plastic chair. For extra features, 30% of the respondents want their chair to be equipped with armrest, 25% of the respondents want back support, 25% of the respondents want the chair to have flip ability and 20% of the respondents want their chair to be equipped with a box. The reasonable price of chair given by 30% of the respondent is between RM10 to RM20. The other 62% wanted the price to be RM20 to RM30 while 8% of them preferred RM30 to RM40 for the price of the chair.
